The Georgia Department of Natural Resources seeks applicants for the above position, one of three Section Chiefs within the Historic Preservation Division (www.gashpo.org). This position provides day-to-day management and policy oversight to a section of four full-time and one part-time professional archaeologists who carry out the State Historic Preservation Office’s responsibilities in the areas of archaeological resource planning, identification, registration, education, protection, and preservation under both state and federal statutes. This position is in the Unclassified Service, with a salary range of $52,172.55 to $91,137.94.

Applicants are being sought who have shown a demonstrated commitment to the preservation field, and generally possess the qualifications and abilities outlined below:

A minimum of a Master’s Degree in Anthropology, with a specialization in archaeology, or closely related field. Substantial training and experience in human osteology and/or prehistory of the southeast U.S. preferred;

experience in an applied work setting such as a state or federal agency, state archaeologist’s office, non-profit, or cultural resources management firm;

substantial knowledge of and experience with federal and state historic preservation programs, laws, and regulations;

demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and complete complex management or research projects while collaborating across organizational and disciplinary boundaries;

communications, negotiation, and public relations skills with public officials, citizen organizations, and Native American, and other groups;

ability to effectively manage and provide leadership for a highly-motivated professional staff to meet the goals, objectives, and responsibilities of the Historic Preservation Division and the Georgia Department of Natural resources.

The primary focus of this limited term assignment will be to complete the exploration trail and historic cottages restoration project. This person will also oversee and carry out all cultural resource management activities for the Springs Preserve to include conducting surveys, obtaining permits, reviewing construction plans, monitoring excavations, supervising the work of consultants in the design, development and/or stabilization/restoration of cultural resource programs, historic structures, landscapes and exhibits.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE will possess a Master’s degree in archaeology or anthropology; completion of archaeology field school and at least two years of professional archaeology experience including survey, excavation, laboratory analysis and preparation of written materials; supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Knowledge and experience in working with the pre-history and history of the Las Vegas Valley and Southern Nevada is very desirable as is a thorough knowledge of federal, state and local preservation laws, regulations and policies.
Salary: $67,768 annually, plus an excellent benefits package.
Hours of Work: 8am–5pm, M-F with flexible availability to work some evening and weekend hours.
