Through advocacy in the United States and around the world, the SAA works to
- Ensure regulatory reviews remain robust while advancing project delivery
- Sustain funding for research and collections
- Defend archaeological jobs
- Combat looting and illegal trade
- Advocate for laws that protect archaeological sites and cultural heritage
- Educate policymakers about the fragile and irreplaceable archaeological record

Who represents the SAA?
The SAA president, on behalf of members, testifies before Congress, submits comments to federal agencies, and engages with international organizations to advocate for archaeology.
How can I get involved?
All members help by funding the Government Affairs program and public outreach efforts at the SAA. A member can get more involved by volunteering with the member committees who advise the SAA president, SAA Board of Directors, and manager of Government Affairs. The Government Affairs Committee, the International Government Affairs Committee, and the Committee on Repatriation work to amplify member voices.
How can I report an issue?
For local or state-level concerns, contact your Government Affairs Network State Representative (GANSR). For national issues, reach out to the chairs of the Government Affairs or Repatriation committees. For international matters, contact the chair of the International Government Affairs Committee.
