Julia Hendon and Calogero Santoro Appointed Co-Editors of Latin American Antiquity

May 20, 2019

The Society for American Archaeology (SAA) is pleased to announce that Drs. Julia Hendon and Calogero Santoro have been appointed the new co-editors of the journal Latin American Antiquity (LAQ). Latin American Antiquity is a quarterly journal devoted to special reports on archaeology, prehistory, and ethnohistory in Mesoamerica, Central America, and South America, and culturally related areas. LAQ is one of three peer-reviewed journals published by SAA.  They will assume their posts in 2020, at the conclusion of the SAA business meeting at the 84th Annual Meeting.

Each of the new co-editors has a long history of research and editorial experience in Latin America.

Dr. Hendon is on the faculty of Gettysburg College (Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA) and currently serves as Associate Provost. She has over thirty years of experience in Mesoamerica, including Guatemala, Belize, and Honduras.

Dr. Santoro is based at the Instituto de Alta Investigación of Universidad de Tarapacá (Arica, Chile). He served for 20 years as editor of Chungara Revista de Antropología Chilena and has been involved in the history of LAQ since its founding.

Drs. Hendon and Santoro plan to build on LAQ’s reputation as a thriving, inclusive journal publishing high-quality research to expand its visibility and impact throughout the Americas and the globe.

“Conservation and preservation remain ongoing challenges in Latin America,” Dr. Hendon said. “Ethical scholarship requires us to be aware of the ways that research can have an impact on stakeholders and interested parties. I look forward to helping LAQ publish articles and reports showcasing a broad range of research approaches.”

“I hope to help broaden LAQ’s reach by integrating more authors and collaborators from Latin America and developing closer ties between Anglo-Saxon and Latin universities in the editorial process,” said Dr. Santoro.  “Including scholarship from countries not published as frequently in LAQ is one of our goals.”

Latin American Antiquity is published four times a year by SAA’s publishing partner, Cambridge University Press.
