Oct 21, 2020
The State Department recently posted the text of the finalized Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Chile and the United States for the protection of Chilean archaeological material. The SAA strongly supported the creation of the MOU. In March 2019, SAA member Dr. César Méndez, Center for Research of Patagonian Ecosystems, Coyhaique, Chile, gave a statement in support of the proposed bilateral agreement between the United States and Chile.
This historic Memorandum of Understanding was signed May 7, 2020, and took effect on September 30, 2020. It is the first formal agreement between the United States and Chile to protect Chilean cultural patrimony.
